Itinerary
1. The archaeological zone of Palenque takes its name from the neighboring community founded at the end of the 16th century: Santo Domingo de Palenque. The last meaning, also of Spanish origin, means “Estacada” or “Empalizada”, which is a wooden fence that surrounds a site to protect it. It is possible that the natives kept in memory the existence of defensive works in the abandoned pre-Hispanic city. On the other hand, the place name comes from the Ch'ol language, referring to the Otulum stream which means “fortified houses” that crosses the archeological zone. Other names have also been used to refer to the old settlement: Na Chán "city of snakes", Ghochan "head or capital of snakes", Nacan, Ototiun "stone house" and Chocan "sculpted snake", among others. The local inhabitants know him by the name of the Otolum Creek, whose alternate meaning is "place of the fallen stones". Xhembobel-Moyos, name of an immediate town, was also used to designate the ruins.
2. The Misol-ha Waterfall as an attraction very close to the Z.A. From Palenque we find this beautiful waterfall, famous for the harmony that combines the elements of water and jungle. Waterfall of approximately 25 meters. high, which when falling, forms a large pool in which it is possible, with caution, to practice swimming. This refreshing and beautiful place is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Chiapas and stage of films like "The Predator" with Arnold Schwarzenegger; for being immersed in a typical example of the high tropical rainforest of the Chiapaneca mountain range.
3. The Agua Azul Waterfalls that has impressive turquoise blue waterfalls that form this wonderful natural resource. Its waterfalls are formed thanks to the tributaries of the Otulúm, Shumuljá and Tulijá river, forming not very deep canyons with vertical cliffs that give rise to its blue and white waterfalls. The waters have that beautiful blue color because of the carbonate salts that are dissolved. The vegetation is lush mountain jungle, in some parts it covers the river, it is common to see trunks of fallen petrified trees.
