One of our friendly and knowledgeable guides will take you from Newcastle Castle along to Monument before stopping at St Andrews, Newcastle's oldest church, past the formidable town walls taking in Friaries, merchant houses, markets, before finishing at the imposing Black Gate - the gatehouse of Newcastle's Castle. From here you will be free to explore the amazingly preserved remains of the Black Gate and Castle Keep for yourselves - tickets are included in the price of the tour at a significant discount. Don't have time to explore Newcastle Castle after your tour? Don't worry! Your return ticket is valid for 48 hours after your tour! Go to the lamppost in the Castle Garth behind the Black Gate building. It is beside the wooden walkway and just a few steps from the stone railway bridge. Your guide will meet you there in medieval clothing, so they will be easy to spot!

Itinerary

1. Castle Garth

Your costumed guide will meet you at the lamppost between the Black Gate and Castle Keep buildings in the Castle Garth, to kick off your tour with the story of the Roman fort Pons Aelius and the origins of settlements along the River Tyne.

2. Grey's Monument

Walk up one the majestic Grey Street, voted one of the most beautiful streets in Britain, before stopping at Grey’s Monument to hear tales of the people who shaped (quite literally) Newcastle throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and admiring the beautiful Georgian and Victorian architecture or Grainger Town.

3. St. Andrew's Church

Our guide will meet you here and tell you all about Newcastle's oldest Church as well as about the time Newcastle was ruled from Scotland!

4. The Newcastle Town Wall

Newcastle once boasted the "largest and fairest" walls of any town in England. Hear tales of sieges, jousts and battles from our guide, including the deeds of the legendary "Hotspur".

5. Blackfriars Medieval Friary

Newcastle's Black Friars began life as the home of the town's Dominician Friars - supposedly "holy men" they soon amassed wealth and political power.

6. Newcastle Cathedral

Once the largest of Newcastle's four parish churches, today the city's Cathedral, St Nicholas' Church is a monument to the wealth and grandeur of Newcastle's merchants.

7. Newcastle Castle

Newcastle Castle includes the two finest surviving medieval buildings in the city, the Black Gate and the iconic Castle Keep. Together they formed part of the royal castle that gave its name to the town. Our guide will introduce you to the Castle outside and you are then free to explore both buildings at your leisure after the end of your tour.
