The medieval buildings of the Old Town, some of which date back to the 10th and 11th centuries, have survived intact to this day. The Jewish minority built synagogues and cemeteries and create a splendid culture making Kazimierz the capitol of the Jewish minority in Poland. The Cracow Ghetto was established by Germans during the Second World War. At that time, it served as the Jewish quarter.
