Explore a 6,000 year-old city many believe to be the Lost City of Atlantis

Overview

Some say that Akrotiri is the *real* Lost City of Atlantis. True or not, this prehistoric wonder is still one of the most spectacular and significant archaeological sites in the Aegean. Located on the beautiful island of Santorini (Thíra), Akrotiri was a prosperous Minoan port town, having ties to mainland Greece and places as distant as Egypt and Syria. Much like the ruins of Pompeii, this ancient town owes its destruction, and, ironically, its amazing preservation to an island-wide volcanic eruption that blanketed everything in superheated ash. Today, a bioclimatic roof covers the site, and walkways are suspended over the archaeological ruins, allowing visitors to move between the two and three-story structures. Still, though, it's probably best not to anger Poseidon when you visit... just in case!

About This Place

Located on the Greek island of Santorini (Thera), Akrotiri is one of the most spectacular and important archeological sites in all of Greece, which is really saying something! Around 6,000 years old, these ancient ruins reveal some of the best-preserved remnants of Minoan civilization ever unearthed, with incredibly well-presevered examples of ceramics and ancient architecture. Akrotiri was evacuated before a massive volcanic eruption destroyed the city and blanketed everything in ash, much like the plight of Pompeii. Akrotiri's location, geological formation, and sudden violent demise have led many people to believe that it is actually the real city that the myth of the Lost City of Atlantis is based on. So, it's probably best not to anger Poseidon while you visit!

Bought a ticket to Akotiri with audioguide and got an audioguide for Fira (Thera), which was useless since we weren't in Thira, but in Akrotiri, thus the audioguide was useless. Contacted customer service and they didn't come up with a solution either. Had a fun time in Akrotiri, but the wrong audioguide did effect our visit to the site. Rating: poor, not the right audioguide with the right ticket and customer service didn't provide a solution. Shame.
