Overview

I am not only a licensed guide with over a decade of experience guiding more than 1,000 private tours across Kyoto, Nara, and western Japan—I am also the author of "The Hidden Language of Beauty: A Journey through Western and Japanese Ways of Seeing." Kindle amazon My tours go beyond explaining temples and shrines. Together, we explore the deeper ideas that shaped Kyoto: why Japanese gardens feel so peaceful, how architecture creates harmony with nature, why simplicity can be more powerful than decoration, and how Japanese aesthetics differ from those of the West. Rather than rushing from one famous attraction to another, I invite you to slow down and experience Kyoto through stories, history, art, and quiet observation. You'll discover not only the city's iconic landmarks but also hidden places that many visitors never find. My goal is simple: by the end of the day, you won't just have seen Kyoto—you'll understand it in a completely new way of seeing.

Itinerary

1. Nijō Castle
is one of the 16 World Heritage Sites in Kyoto. It was built 400 years ago by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. As there is no original palace except NIjho Castle, Its value is historically and architecturally priceless. In addition, gorgeous wall paintings and its lord garden attract your attention. It is like a living museum, indeed. In this visit, you come to know about Shogun Ieyasu’s intention of building the palace.
Duration: 60 mins
2. Ryoan-ji Temple
is also a world heritage site in Kyoto, internationally famous for its dry garden. The garden consists of white sand, moss, and 15 rocks. Through the visit to this temple, you will know why zen attracts people today and also understand why samurai supported zen. Another attraction is maple trees, which heal and relax people throughout the year.
Duration: 60 mins
3. Shoren-in Temple (Shoren-in Monzeki)
is the highlight of this tour. This is not a world heritage site, but it has enormous historical and cultural value. It’s no exaggeration to say that you cannot visit Kyoto without visiting Shorenin. Once you enter the temple, you will instantly notice the difference from other destinations. The essence of Kyoto and Japan is condensed here. This is the authentic Kyoto I’ll invite you to.
Duration: 120 mins
4. Gion Shirakawa
At the end of the tour, you walk along Shirakawa Riverside. Unlike Gion Shirakawa, it has much fewer visitors. The riverside with willow trees is quiet and serene. You can feel the atmosphere of the traditional townscape.
Duration: 60 mins
5. Kyoto City Nakagyo Area Gymnasium
Food is one of the attractions you can enjoy in Kyoto. This lunch place is the best. Delicious, reasonable price, friendly atmosphere. All my clients get happy after eating here.
