Itinerary

1. Catacombs Of Kom El Shoqafa
Start your day with a visit to Alexandria, a stunning coastal city filled with history. Explore the ancient necropolis of Kom El Shoqafa, a unique burial site blending Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures. Discover its underground catacombs, intricate tombs, and three ancient sarcophagi. Learn how this site, dating back to the 2nd to 4th century AD, was rediscovered in 1900 when a donkey fell into its access shaft.
Duration: 120 mins
2. Pompey's Pillar
Next, visit Pompey’s Pillar, a towering 30-meter red granite column with a fascinating history. Despite its name, it has no connection to Pompey. Built around 300 AD, it honors Emperor Diocletian and stands on what was once the Serapeum, a grand temple dedicated to the god Serapis. Learn how the site was destroyed in 391 AD during a Christian uprising led by Patriarch Theophilus, possibly including the Great Library of Alexandria. Today, visitors can explore the area, uncover tunnels, and see remarkable artifacts like a black basalt bull and a golden plaque at the Greco-Roman Museum.
Duration: 60 mins
3. Ancient Roman Amphitheater
Next, visit the Roman Amphitheater, a stunning example of Alexandria’s Greco-Roman heritage. Built in the 4th century AD, this theater features 13 marble tiers that could seat up to 800 people, known for their incredible acoustics. Explore its underground chambers, mosaic floors, and nearby ruins, including ancient baths. Discovered by chance in the 1960s, the site continues to unveil secrets of Roman life in Alexandria.
Duration: 90 mins
4. Citadel of Qaitbay
The next stop is the Citadel of Qaitbay, a 15th-century fortress on Alexandria’s Mediterranean coast. Built in 1477 AD by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa’it Bay, it stands on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Explore the fortress’s thick walls, defensive towers, and stunning views of the sea. Learn about its role in protecting Alexandria from invasions and its connection to the city’s rich maritime history.
Duration: 90 mins
5. Alexandria Library
Finally, pass by the modern Alexandria Library, a stunning architectural marvel inspired by the ancient Great Library. Its design symbolizes the rising sun and represents Alexandria’s enduring legacy as a center of knowledge and culture. Don’t forget to capture some memorable photos before we wrap up this unforgettable journey through Alexandria’s rich history.
