Overview

Your local guide, Matt, will lead a gentle, meandering walk around Glastonbury's countryside, taking in spectacular views and natural beauty while orientating to the town’s main attractions. A Tor climb and visit to the springs are included. Matt, a resident of Glastonbury for over 12 years, has keen knowledge of local heritage, attractions, trees, walking routes, and landscapes. He shares the natural beauty alongside historical insights into the town and countryside. You will discover local attractions, idyllic spots off the beaten track, and meet some of the oldest and largest trees in the area. The walk includes readings of seasonal nature poetry and a short acoustic performance of gentle folk music. A Tor climb can be included—a great way to finish by looking down on the routes travelled, landmarks, and Avalon's farthest horizons. Explore Glastonbury, Avalon, and its history and heritage through nature and trees, guided by a local resident.

Walks start at 11am (this can be flexible to some extent), there is also an option to start at 2pm if you are not arriving until later in the day. We meet in a prominent spot, outside the St John's church on the High Street. You can't miss it.

Alternatively we can end at one of Glastonbury's wells. All end point are within easy walking distance of the town centre.

Itinerary

1. Glastonbury

While taking a gentle walk around the town and countryside, we learn about the history and heritage of Glastonbury town, the Abbey, Tor, and the surrounding landscapes. We orientate to Glastonbury's main tourist attractions while heading towards Glastonbury Tor to climb and look down upon the routes we have taken. On the way, we meet Avalon's most prominent trees and take in some spectacular viewpoints and areas of natural beauty. There will be time to talk, observe, relax, and enjoy the natural surrounds, as well as take in a wealth of local and historical information. The tour is accompanied by short poetry recitals and a short performance of gentle folk music inspired by the land and the trees - in true Glastonbury style. We pass by the red and the white springs, and on the way back to town we pass along the abbey wall and get a glimpse of the ruins. Nature, culture, history, heritage, and orientation to the main tourist attractions are all included.

2. White Spring Well & Temple

On our way down from the Tor, we make a short visit to the red and white springs. Here, there is time to drink from the healing waters and to visit the White Spring, if it is open (after 1.30 pm). We also pass the entrance to the Chalice Well Gardens, a recommended visitor attraction to explore in your own time, though it is not included as part of the Tor.

3. Glastonbury Tor

For the full Glastonbury experience, a climb of the Tor is recommended. At the summit, Matt shares the history of the Tor, points out local landmarks, reflects on the views and routes we have taken, and offers a guided tour of Avalon's farthest horizons.

4. Chalice Well

We'll locate the entrance to the Chalice Well Gardens, we wont enter the gardens as this is something that visitors might want to explore in their own time.
