2. Main southern entrance of the Forbidden City, with grand tower architecture and historical ceremonial significance.
3. The largest and most prestigious hall. Venue for imperial coronations, weddings and major state rituals. Features golden dragon throne, ten roof creatures and grand marble platform.
4. A square pavilion-style hall between the other two. Used by emperors to rest and review rituals scripts before grand ceremonies.
5. Hosted the final imperial civil service exams in Qing dynasty. Boasts the Forbidden City’s largest stone carving (250-ton dragon-and-cloud slab) at the rear.
6. Emperor’s bedroom and office before Emperor Yongzheng. Home to the famous “Upright and Bright” plaque, behind which the secret imperial succession edict was kept.
7. The imperial garden at the northern end of the central axis. Features the Hall of Imperial Peace, rockeries, ancient cypress trees and pavilions. A serene retreat for the imperial family.
8. The northern gate and main exit of the Forbidden City. Formerly with bells and drums for telling time; faces Jingshan Park directly outside.
