Overview

Immerse yourself in one of the most exciting and visited places in Rome, the Catacombs of St. Callixtus on the ancient Appian Way. These Catacombs are named after Pope Callistus I, who was killed in Trastevere in 222 while saying mass. Initially they were used by the early Christians as a meeting place and only later were transformed into a cemetery. Archaeologists have found the tombs of numerous popes and martyrs of Christianity. Next to the tomb of St. Cecilia, also worthy of note is the crypt of the popes, where nine popes of the first centuries of Christianity were buried. Starting from the meeting point near the Colosseum, relax with a transfer in an air-conditioned vehicle to one of Rome's most interesting sites, the Catacombs. Accompanied by a licensed guide, embark on an exclusive tour and discover the true history and mystery of this fascinating place.

Itinerary

1. Appian Way (Via Appia Antica)
A long story that winds its way through the centuries: with its 2300 years of history, the Appia Antica shows intact the signs of an illustrious and fascinating past, still clearly visible among the ruins that line the sides of the road. Episodes of great history and daily life echo in this idyllic setting since the times of ancient Rome, in a continuous unfolding between the "dark ages" of the Middle Ages, passing through the Renaissance, up to the creation of the open-air museum wanted by Pope Pius IX in the mid-nineteenth century.
2. Catacombe di San Callisto
You will have a privileged guided tour inside the Catacombs of St. Callixtus. The law of ancient Rome forbade, for sanitary reasons, to bury the dead within the city. The consular roads were lined with splendid sepulchres of patricians, who were generally cremated and whose ashes were preserved in urns. The first Christians, however, believing that they had to be ready for the resurrection, were buried without cremation in underground caves dug into the tuff. The dead were placed inside the loculi after being wrapped in two layers of cloth soaked in lye, to avoid the risk of contamination to the living.
