Animals to Visit in Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden
There are over 400 species of animals to see here at Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden! However, do note that animal visibility is not guaranteed since many of them have access to areas not viewable by guests. In cases like these, your Cincinnati Zoo discount tickets allow you to circle back to any area, anytime.
-
Hippopotamus
Take some time to visit the second largest land mammal on the planet, the hippopotamus! The hippos are located in the Africa section of the zoo. These herbivores like to keep cool in the water and mud but they can also go on land, especially to feed on grass.
Do note that it must be sunny and 40 degrees or higher for them to stay comfortably outside. Otherwise, zookeepers might have to move them indoors, which would make them unviewable.
-
Black Rhinoceros
Black rhinos might be the smaller species compared to white rhinos but make no mistake. These mammals can weigh up to 3,080 lbs. Unfortunately, due to poachers illegally taking rhinos’ horns, this species is critically endangered.
You can visit the zoo’s black rhinos at the Rhino Reserve area. If you’d like to make a donation to support rhino conservation around the world, you can purchase a painting made using non-toxic paint and a rhino’s semi-prehensile lips. Not only do you get a unique work of art from a rhino, but you also get to help a good cause!
-
African Penguins
If you want to meet the infamous flightless bird, check out the African penguins at the zoo’s African Penguin Point! Though these birds can’t fly in the air, they can hold their own in water. Not only can they hold their breath for up to 2 minutes, but they can also dive more than 400 feet deep.
They are an endangered species, but programs such as the AZA SAFE African Penguins, which Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden actively supports, help with conservation efforts.
