2. Visit the Thermopylae Information Center which is dedicated to the 480 BC battle that changed the course of Greek history and western civilization as we know it today. Enjoy a 15 minute documentary outlining the battle in 3D
3. Visit the Battlefield. Thermopylae is an area in Greece by the Malian Gulf in the W Aegean sea where a narrow coastal passage existed in antiquity. The Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC was fought between 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians & locals led by King Leonidas of Sparta against the mighty Persian Empire led by King Xerxes. We visit the statue dedicated to King Leonidas - Molon Lave! If you want our weapons...'Come & take them' Visit the statue dedicated to the 700 Thespians Visit Mt Kolonos - The last stance with the epitaph that reads 'Stranger go and tell the Lacedemonians & world that we lay here according to our orders ' Visit the Gates of Fire: Deriving from the Hot Sulphur Springs & in Greek mythology the cavernous entrances to one of the 7 gateways to Hades. 4. Appreciate the Frieze of the Treasury of Sifnias Naxian Sphinx: 560 BC, one of the earliest representations in art of the demonic creature with a lion's body, bird's wings & a woman's head. Metopes of the Athenian Treasury: 5th century BC you will gaze upon Theseus and Antiope, Theseus & the Minotaur, Theseus & Marathonian bull, Heracles & the cattle of Geryon battling the three-bodied giant Geryon, Heracles subduing a Centaur & Cycnus, Heracles & the Nemean lion, & a Amazonomachy scene. Visit the archaeological site: Delphi formerly also called Pytho is famous for the ancient sanctuary that grew rich as the seat of Pythia, the oracle who was consulted about important decisions throughout the ancient classical world. The Greeks and ancient world considered Delphi the navel or center of the world as represented by the stone monument known as the Omphalos of Delphi. Archaeological site: A Unesco World Heritage Center, Delphi is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. The functions of the oracle grew over the centuries to include athletic games, cultural events, most importantly the Pythian games. The Temple of Apollo, the Ancient Theater, the Stadium, the Athenian Treasury, the Gymnasium, the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia are truly captivating. Visit the remarkable temple of Athena Pronaia.
