Itinerary
1. The Bovenkerk is a prominent example of Gothic architecture in the Netherlands and is renowned for its imposing tower, which dominates the city's skyline. Construction of the church began in the 14th century, and it was completed in the 15th century. The church was built on higher ground, hence its name "Bovenkerk" or "Upper Church," to distinguish it from the lower-lying parts of the city.
2. The Koornmarktspoort, which translates to "Koornmarkt Gate," is one of the four remaining city gates of Kampen, along with the Cellebroederspoort, Broederpoort, and the city's most famous gate, the Kamperpoort. The Koornmarktspoort is named after the nearby Koornmarkt, which was historically a market square where grain was traded.
3. Burgwal runs through the heart of Kampen's old town, surrounded by buildings that showcase various architectural styles spanning several centuries. The street retains much of its historical character, with many buildings dating back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period.
4. Like many medieval city gates, the Cellebroederspoort played a crucial role in controlling access to the city and defending it against potential invaders. It was part of Kampen's extensive defensive walls, which encircled the city and provided protection to its residents.
5. Constructed in the late 14th century, the Koldenhovenpoort served as one of the main entrances to the fortified city center of Kampen. Like other medieval city gates, its primary function was controlling access to the city and providing defense against potential attackers.
6. The Nieuwe Markt is surrounded by historic buildings, many of which date back to the medieval and Renaissance periods. These buildings feature a mix of architectural styles, including traditional Dutch gabled facades, which add to the square's picturesque charm and historical ambiance.
7. The building's construction dates back to the late 14th century, making it one of the oldest town halls in the Netherlands. It was originally built in the Gothic style, with subsequent renovations and additions over the centuries, reflecting various architectural influences.
