Itinerary

1. Hakata Sennen no Mon
A symbolic gate marking the entrance to Hakata’s historic temple district. It connects the merchant town area with temple grounds and serves as the perfect starting point for your cultural journey. Passing through the gate feels like stepping back in time.
2. Jotenji
Said to be the birthplace of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. The temple features tranquil grounds and commemorative monuments.

3. Tochoji Temple
Famous for housing one of Japan’s largest wooden Buddha statues. Includes a unique Hell and Paradise tour experience (no photos allowed). Cherry blossoms in spring are stunning.

4. Shofuku-ji Temple
Japan’s oldest Zen temple. Though the interior isn’t open to the public, the Chinese-style architecture and lush garden are very photogenic—especially during cherry and azalea seasons. Cats often roam the grounds.

Hakata’s main guardian shrine. Festival floats are on display year-round, making it a favorite spot for photos.
