Overview

The "Etna - Ring on the Valley" trek is a real volcanic bath of Etna ash that you will absorb like a sponge, in your veins. Etna, with its 3,403 meters of height, is a volcanic giant that dominates the Sicilian landscape, a unique attraction in the world both for its majestic presence and for its volcanic activity. It is the largest active volcano in Europe, a natural laboratory where nature manifests itself in all its power, with spectacular eruptions and a unique landscape, characterized by lava flows, craters, caves and volcanic deserts. These environments offer a suggestive spectacle, with the contrast between the wild nature and the fascinating aesthetics and image of Etna. In fact, it is a symbol of Sicily and its culture, present in legends, traditions and art. Its presence influences the daily life of Sicilians, with crops that adapt to volcanic conditions and a special relationship with the mountain.

Itinerary

1. Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza
After the guide's welcome with a coffee, and after a short briefing, we will set off for the trek. From the starting point, with the first introduction I will immediately immerse you in the lunar landscape of Etna with its lava flows and its characteristic "buttonhole" craters, among which, some protagonists of recent destructions in the modern history of the volcano.
Duration: 30 mins
2. Craters Silvestri of Mount Etna
From the starting point, with the first introduction I will immediately immerse you in the lunar landscape of Etna with its lava flows and its characteristic “buttonhole” craters, among which some are the protagonists of recent destructions in the modern history of the volcano.
Duration: 30 mins
3. Mount Etna
The walk will proceed step by step, progressively increasing the altitude, which will allow you to appreciate the elegant endemic flora and native fauna, both inside and outside the woods rich in tree species of the high-mountain belt, of the most active volcano in Europe.
Duration: 60 mins
4. Valle Del Bove
We will cross sandy deserts, small depressions, accumulations of vegetation typical of lava deserts, accompanied by an incredible panorama that will leave you breathless, until reaching the most imposing and fascinating caldera depression for its majesty, the "Valle del Bove". Through this surreal vision, it will be possible to appreciate a panorama rich in elements, which surround this privileged area; from the summit area of the active craters to the Ionian Sea, where cities of Greek origin have come to life since ancient times, and from the boot of Italy, Calabria, to the Tyrrhenian Sea, it will be exciting to see on days of good visibility, the Strait of Messina.
Duration: 120 mins
5. Mount Etna
This is the stage that I like to call “Sotf-challenge”, it will be exciting and equally super fun, in several passages, to be able to sink your legs and feet into the very fine and soft lava sand, to make you understand how much of this sand the volcano emits when it produces its paroxysms.
Duration: 60 mins
6. Grotta Cassone
Finally, we will proceed for a spectacular descent into the bowels of the volcano through a visit to a lava flow cave (lava tube), generated during a volcanic eruption, equipped with a speleologist helmet and torches, to understand the phenomena connected to the flow of lava, as well as the myths, legends and historical traditions of the uses of the caves.
