Overview

You'll embark on a 9-hour group tour from Lisbon to explore the central-west region of Portugal. This tour is limited to 8 participants and is conducted entirely in English. Your first stop will be in Fatima, one of the most significant shrines in Catholicism, attracting over 6 million visitors each year. Next, you'll visit Nazare, a charming coastal city renowned for its stunning waves, which are the largest ever surfed in the world. Itinerary

1. The meeting point is at Avenida da Liberdade 9, in front of the Armani Exchange store.
2. The Chapel of the Apparitions is a small chapel in Fatima, marking the site where three shepherd children reported apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

3. You will stop and explore the Sanctuary of Fatima for about 1 hour. Fatima is today one of Catholicism’s major shrines and is visited by 6 million people every year. It is said that the Virgin Mary appeared to three children – Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta – every single month from May 13th, 1917 until October 13th, 1917.

4. This church was established in the 14th century when King Ferdinand came on a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Nazare, commemorating an ancient miracle attributed to the Virgin Mary's intercession.

5. Nazare is a charming fishing town with plenty of places to stop and enjoy the ocean view. The town center is bustling with seafood restaurants, making it a great spot to sample local cuisine. Situated 110 meters (360 feet) above the ocean, this cliff-top area offers breathtaking views. One notable landmark is a small chapel built in 1182 by a local nobleman, Dom Fuas Roupinho, in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for saving his life. Close by is the baroque church, Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Nazare, which was constructed in the 14th century. Take some time to relax in this beautiful location and be sure to try a typical local restaurant for lunch.

6. Here, you will experience breathtaking views from a clifftop promontory.

7. To fully appreciate Praia da Nazare and the southern part of Nazare village, you will stop at the top of the Nazare cliff. This picturesque seaside view is definitely worth seeing.

8. You'll visit the small Hermida da Memoria chapel located on the edge of the Nazare cliff. It has been visited by many famous pilgrims, including Vasco da Gama.

9. Praia do Norte get some of the biggest waves in the world. It was in 2011 that this beach hit the headlines when Garrett McNamara surfed a record-breaking 24-meter wave here.

10. The Forte de Sao Miguel is a 16th-century fort that was converted into a lighthouse. It offers spectacular views of the ocean and houses the Nazare Canyon Interpretive Center.

11. Obidos is a medieval town that was captured from the Moors in 1148. Since then, it has been a walled city, featuring cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses adorned with flowers. Founded on a hilltop with views of the ocean, the bay gradually silted up, and since the 15th century, Obidos has been a landlocked town. However, Obidos is not just about its medieval architecture; it is also known for its lively festivals, bookstores, small museums, and local delicacies like chocolate and ginjinha (a cherry liqueur, one serving per person is included in the price). In recent years, Obidos has been reinventing itself as a literary center.
