Itinerary

1. Robert Smalls Monument
The Robert Smalls Monument stands in Beaufort, South Carolina, honoring one of the most extraordinary figures of the Civil War and Reconstruction era. Robert Smalls was born enslaved in Beaufort and became famous in 1862 when he commandeered a Confederate ship, the CSS Planter, sailed it past enemy forts, and delivered it—and its crew—to the Union Navy, freeing himself and his family.
2. John Mark Verdier House
The John Mark Verdier House Museum is a historic Federal-style house in Beaufort, South Carolina, built around 1804 by French Huguenot merchant and planter John Mark Verdier. The stately home, located at 801 Bay Street, exemplifies early 19th-century architecture with a raised tabby foundation, two-story pedimented portico, and elegant symmetry. It showcased Verdier’s wealth from indigo trading and Sea Island cotton plantations and became a social centerpiece in Beaufort’s downtown.
