Overview

Women make up half of this country, and yet are largely ignored when it comes to history books. This walking tour of historic Boston will tell you the stories of the incredible women who changed the course of Boston...and American history. From Puritan women who bravely stood up to the government, to the first female/Person of Color to be elected mayor of Boston, we will talk about the wild and wonderful women of Boston. The Women's History tour will be most entertaining for children over the age of 13, but children of all ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults are responsible for their own and their children's behavior and safety. This tour contains discussions of slavery and violence, so parental discretion is advised. Tours will run in light rain. We will cancel for unpleasant or unsafe weather conditions to ensure your safety and enjoyment of our tours. This tour requires at least three guests to operate.

Itinerary

1. Bell In Hand Tavern

Just outside of the Bell in Hand, we will begin our tour with a short stroll down an alley way and back in time to learn about a woman who makes Paul Revere look unpatriotic, as well as some of our Founding Mothers.

2. Government Center

Boston has a complicated relationship with politics and politicians. We’ll discuss Boston’s political history, and current mayor, as well as a brief history of the former Scollay Square.

Duration: 15 mins

3. King's Chapel Burying Ground

Learn about the oldest colonial burying ground in Boston, and how the Puritans ended up here, as well as the stories of some of the women who are buried here.

Duration: 15 mins

4. Mary Dyer Statue

A Puritan-era women stood up to the government of Massachusetts and left a legacy that impacted our legislature today, but her name is largely ignored in history books.

5. Massachusetts State House

Two incredible women from two very different historic eras leave their mark on the laws of Massachusetts and the landscape of Boston.

6. Boston Common

Hear the daring exploits of one of the few female pirates in American history, and the last woman hung in Massachusetts.

7. Granary Burying Ground

Famously the final resting place for many of the heroes of the American Revolution, but we will discuss the towering women of literature who are buried...or maybe buried here.
