1. Main Street District
Compare what Dallas looked like on November 22, 1963, as you travel the exact parade route JFK was on. Approximately 90,000 people lined the streets to wave at President Kennedy and his wife Jackie, who arguably was more popular than her husband. - Why was JFK in Dallas? - Was the parade route changed at the last second? - Was the FBI aware of Lee Harvey Oswald?
2. Dallas Municipal Building
Two days after JFK’s assassination, Oswald was shot and killed by a local nightclub owner in the garage of the Dallas Police station. We therefore never saw a trial for Lee Harvey Oswald. In September of 1964, after a 10-month investigation, the Warren Commision concluded Lee Harvey Oswald murdered both President Kennedy and J.D. Tippit, that Oswald acted alone, and that there was no conspiracy involved with killing the President. Still, about three-quarters of people don’t buy the Commission’s conclusion, resulting in the most controversial case in the history of the world. - Who was Jack Ruby? - Why did he murder Oswald? - Do any newly released documents prove a conspiracy?
3. Dealey Plaza National Historic Landmark District
Known as the “front-door” to the city, the three streets of Dealey Plaza is less than a mile east of where Dallas was founded on the Trinity River. Considered by many to be the location of a second gunman, the north side of Dealey Plaza known as the “grassy knoll”, is a mysterious and controversial historical site. 6. The exact location where Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit was shot dead in the streets, about 45 minutes after the shooting of the President. Later that day, based on witness testimony and other pieces of evidence, Dallas charged Lee Harvey Oswald with Tippit’s murder and the city has always maintained Oswald was the killer. 7. The Texas Theatre
At 1:50 pm, a half-mile from the Tippit scene at the historic Texas Theatre, Lee Harvey Oswald is arrested. According to witnesses, Oswald pulled his pistol out in the theatre and engaged in a fight with the officers. Later, Dallas police found two IDs in Oswald’s wallet. One ID said, “Lee Harvey Oswald”, and the other, “Alek James Hidell”. - How did police know Oswald was in the theatre? - What did he say when police approached him? - Who is Alek James Hidell?
