1. Burketown Visitor Centre

Meet the group at the Burketown Visitor Informatoin Centre

Duration: 15 mins

2. Burketown

View the colourful Burketown Hot Water Bore and see the gorgeous colours from the silicate in the water. The bore was the first attempt to provide a year-round water supply to the town. View the wetlands created by the free-flowing bore and the wildlife it attracts.

3. Burketown

Albert River Bridge - Learn the history of Burketown and the role the Gambumanda River (Albert River) played in the opening up of the area. This covers from first contact between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous right through to the present-day providing context of events in both Australia and globally. Traverse through Burketown (Moungibi) learning about the evolution and structure of the local community present day.

4. Burketown

Visit the Burketown Boat Ramp, learning about the local Crocodiles, the different types of mangroves and their traditional uses and some f the Ranger Programs relating to the river.

Head out onto Australia's largest aggregate of Salt Pāns, view endless plains and unique vistas. Learn about the rare epicontinental sea and how the indigenous peoples traversed the plains.

Visit Woods Lake - Named after Lieutenant Woods from the vessel "HMS Firefly" that ran aground and sank at the mouth of the Albert. Learn about local trees, their age and how to tell the seasons. Understand the importance of water sources, erosion and the impact that Chinese settlement had on the region.

7. Burketown

Stop at Escott Crossing for morning/afternoon tea. Stop at Escott Crossing. Bath your feet in the cool water of the tranquil Nicholson River. Enjoy a cuppa and muffin (or similar) beneath the shade of lush foliage at the current water source for the town. Participate in an open discussion about points visited and topics of interest.
