Itinerary
1. Become acquainted with the history of Mauthausen Memorial in a little over two hours during the ride from Vienna. By the summer of 1940, Mauthausen had become one of the largest labor camp complexes in the Nazi-occupied part of Europe. Some 200,000 people have been imprisoned at Mauthausen between 1938 and 1945. About half of them lost their lives. Mauthausen was among the last concentration camps to be liberated by the Allies. Upon arrival at the Memorial grab your audio guide (available in 11 languages) for a self-guided tour through the preserved grounds. In your own time visit the prisoner’s barracks, roll call area, SS-quarters, camp prison, gas chamber, and the highly rated Mauthausen Museum with the "Room of Names". The bistro at Mauthausen Memorial serves snacks and drinks if you get hungry.
2. We'll take you to the Wiener-Graben quarry which is located outside of the Memorial. You'll see where the prisoners produced granite for Hitler's monumental construction projects. In the quarry you can also see the now-closed "Stairs of Death". Heading back to Vienna stop at a local restaurant for lunch (own expense).
