You’re about to go on an awesome adventure to the summit of Maui’s tallest volcano, but there are a few things you should know about the tour before you get started.

You must make an online reservation and pay $1 if you’re visiting the park for sunrise (between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m.).

Pack warm clothes -- temperatures can drop below freezing at the summit. (No joke!)

The tour starts and ends in Kahului. If you are coming from the resort areas of Ka'anapali or Lahaina in West Maui, it's about a 45-minute drive to the start in Kahului.

There’s nowhere to buy food in the park. Pack a picnic or eat before you go.

Entrance to Haleakala National Park is $30 per car -- you can pay with credit/debit or digital form of payment. Or purchase your pass ahead of time on Recreation.gov

The sun rises at about 7 a.m. in the winter and 5:30 a.m. in the summer.

Expect to spend about 4-6 hours on the tour.

We recommend starting from Kahului around 4:30 a.m. (depending on the time of year)

Travelers must have a smartphone compatible with the Shaka Guide app.

The app must be downloaded and the tour redeemed before arrival.

Strong Wi-Fi or cellular data is required to download the tour in advance.

Location services (GPS) must be enabled on the device

Travelers are responsible for securing any required entrance passes, reservations, or permits before starting
