Overview

There is a place in Sardinia where you can stand in a Roman theater and look out over the sea once crossed by Phoenician sailors, where the past feels surprisingly close. This is Nora. Travel in a small group with an expert English-speaking guide from Cagliari. Before you arrive, you'll pass the Santa Gilla Lagoon, where wild pink flamingos gather throughout the year. You'll stop at the church of Sant'Efisio, an 11th-century chapel dedicated to Sardinia's most beloved saint, and hear about the famous procession held in Cagliari every May 1st. Then comes Nora. Founded by the Phoenicians, developed by the Carthaginians, and transformed by the Romans, Nora was inhabited for centuries before the sea reclaimed its lower quarters. What remains: a theater overlooking the water, thermal baths, mosaics, temples, and streets — set against turquoise sea and golden sand. Good to know Walking level: Moderate (mostly flat, slow pace, with regular stops)
