This majestic temple dedicated to Athena stands as a masterpiece of classical architecture and art, symbolizing the city’s golden age and cultural achievements. 3. View the imposing ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, once the largest temple in Greece. Construction began in the 6th century BC but wasn’t completed until the 2nd century AD under Roman Emperor Hadrian—over 600 years later. This colossal temple, originally boasting 104 massive columns, honored Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, and housed one of the ancient world’s largest cult statues.
4. Pause at the Panathenaic Stadium, originally built in 330 BC for the Panathenaic Games and later rebuilt in marble by Herodes Atticus around 144 AD. With a seating capacity of 60,000, it’s the only stadium in the world made entirely of marble. After centuries of abandonment, it was revived in the 19th century and famously hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
