Itinerary
1. Pass through Independence Square, the center of Indonesia’s state government, including the Presidential Palace and the Arjuna Wijaya Statue
2. Visit the National Monument (Monas), a 132-meter-tall landmark symbolizing Indonesia’s independence. The monument’s basement features 48 dioramas showcasing the nation’s history. Inside the Independence Room, see the Proclamation Gate, Garuda as the national emblem, and a gold-plated map of Indonesia. Please note: The National Monument is closed on Mondays.
3. Istiqlal Mosque is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the sixth largest in the world by worshipper capacity. It's name, “Istiqlal,” means “Independence” in Arabic. Located in the heart of Jakarta, directly opposite the National Cathedral, the mosque stands as a symbol of peace and religious tolerance. Please note: Istiqlal Mosque is closed on Fridays; visits are limited to viewing from the outside only.
4. Located on Jalan Lapangan Banteng Utara, the Cathedral Church was built in 1891 in a neo-Gothic architectural style. The church features tall towers and high windows adorned with stained glass. Inside, three main altars form a semi-circle, including a beautiful historic altar designed to reflect sound like a conch shell.
5. Visit a traditional wet market to experience daily life in Jakarta. Explore the bustling stalls, watch the local community carry out their daily activities and sample authentic Indonesian snacks and tropical fruits.
6. Visit the Dharma Bhakti Temple, the oldest Confucian temple in Jakarta. Still active today, it serves as a center for worship, religious ceremonies, and the preservation of Chinese traditions.
7. This area was formerly the center of the Dutch colonial government. With its canals and historic buildings featuring classic Dutch architecture, it is often referred to as “Little Amsterdam.”
8. Next, step back in time at the Jakarta History Museum (Fatahillah Museum) in the heart of the iconic Old Town. Housed in a former Dutch colonial city hall, the museum brings Jakarta’s past to life through fascinating artifacts, historic maps, and stories spanning from its early beginnings to independence. It’s a must-visit for history enthusiasts and first-time visitors eager to explore the city’s cultural roots. Please note: The museum is closed on Mondays.
9. Meet traditional puppet masters and learn about Indonesian puppetry. Discover how puppets are made, watch them in action, and explore a collection of wayang from various regions of Indonesia. Please note: If you are lucky, you may get to see a live performance by the puppet master.
10. To conclude the tour, visit Jakarta’s oldest port, which once witnessed the height of Dutch control over the spice trade in Indonesia. Today, the port is still in use for domestic shipping, with traditional Phinisi wooden boats neatly anchored and lined along the harbor.
