Overview

We are proud to offer guests this option to experience the rarely-traveled "backside" of the Road to Hana- including the amazing landscapes of Kipahulu, Kaupo, and Ulupalakua! With our Ultimate Package, your group will get to experience everything included in the standard Road to Hana tour, and then continue on past Hana. It's almost impossible to believe, but the landscape becomes even more dramatic beyond Hana. The highway follows the coast into Kipahulu, where impressive jungle is punctuated by astonishing cliffs plunging into the ocean. Here, you will get an opportunity to swim in Wailua Falls, a stunning 80 foot waterfall plunging into a pleasant pool. As we travel through Kaupō, the terrain changes from dense jungle into windswept, rolling hills cut by deep ravines.

Meeting and Pickup

Meeting point

To absolutely maximize your day, we suggest meeting your guide at our office in Paia. Cutting down on highway time means more time for stops! Our office is right next door to a charming country store stocked with coffee and snacks, and our private parking lot is safe and easy to find.

Pickup Information

For guests arriving on a cruise ship, we ask that you meet your guide at a location a short distance from the harbor (~15 min walking). Drop off is simpler- we can bring you to a designated area right alongside the vessel within the harbor! Your guide will text you from their personal cell phone a couple of days before your tour to confirm pickup details and introduce themselves. Whether you opt to meet your guide at our office or start the day directly from your resort, having a direct means to communicate with your guide makes the morning stress- free!

A stunning black volcanic rock shoreline that juts out into the powerful waves of the Pacific is the backdrop to a glimpse of the Maui's past. Here in Keʻanae, the traditional method of loʻi kalo (wetland taro) agriculture is still practiced. Enjoy a loaf of the famous Aunty Sandy's banana bread (as featured on National Geographic's Uncharted with Gordon Ramsey!) while you watch and listen to the thunderous waves breaking on shore.

Enjoy the view while strolling along the pockets of red sand beach, and look out at Leho‘ula sea arch back towards town. There is also a food truck park in town with several options, Braddah Hutt's BBQ Grill just outside of town, or the Hana Ranch Restaurant if you feel like soaking in an ocean view with your meal. After lunch, we'll load up and take your group to Hana Bay, where you can enjoy a great view of Hana Town, and hear about the fascinating history of this area.

10. Ulupalakua
By now, the day is winding down. There is no better way to catch the sunset than by looking out over the South Maui coastline from Ulupalakua, an area of quiet ranch land and striking views. Here, Hawaiian cowboys, or paniolos, herded cattle and established a unique cowboy culture that predated the American West.
11. Huialoha Church
Visually stunning, the Mokulau Islets are a number of lava rocks offshore from the beautiful Huialoha Church. The church itself was painstakingly restored by members of the community in the 1970's. This corner of the backside feels genuinely remote — few visitors ever make it this far.
