Itinerary
1. From your address in Amsterdam, we drive to one of the prettiest villages of The Netherlands: “DE RIJP”. Here, we start the day with a pleasant morning walk along a canal with beautiful traditional wooden houses. The monumental buildings in this village are all from the Dutch Golden Age, including the impressive town hall. This feels like being in an open-air museum, but it is real!
2. It’s a short drive from DE RIJP to SCHERMERHORN, because what is a visit to The Netherlands without seeing the iconic windmills that made water into land? You’re in for a treat, because SCHERMERHORN is the home of three of the oldest and most beautiful traditional Dutch windmills. One mill is now a museum and you can explore it from top to bottom.
3. We continue the tour towards the province of Friesland and therefore we have to cross the most famous of all Dutch water-works: the “Afsluitdijk” (ENCLOSING DIKE). This man-made 32kilometer long structure blocks off an entire sea to keep the country safe.
4. In Friesland, we have a very special Lunch in the village of WOUDSEND. A church-building from the 18th century is transformed into a restaurant with its interior almost intact. What a way to enjoy nice local food with (for example) a good glass of wine.
5. After lunch, we continue the tour to SLOTEN, the smallest of the legendary 11 towns of Friesland. During a pleasant (but easy) town walk, our guide will show you the picturesque charm of this historic place. You will be amazed by the old 17th century merchant houses with beautiful characteristic gables. With the experience of an unforgettable day in The Netherlands, we return to your address in Amsterdam.
