Overview

Discover three completely different sides of the Netherlands on this full-day private tour: The Hague, Delft, and Rotterdam, with transfers included. In The Hague, your guide walks you past the Binnenhof, Noordeinde Palace, and the elegant streets of the political heart of the Netherlands. In Delft, you step into the Dutch Golden Age: canals, churches, and stories of Vermeer, William of Orange, and Antony van Leeuwenhoek. Halfway, you sit down for lunch in one of Delft's historic buildings. In Rotterdam, you explore a city bombed flat in 1940 and rebuilt as a showcase of bold architecture, including a visit inside one of the iconic Cube Houses. Transfers between the cities, a sit-down lunch in Delft, and Cube House entry are all included. You can do the tour in either direction. Pickup and drop-off from other locations, including Amsterdam, can also be arranged. You set the pace, and if you have any special requests or an interest in a certain topic, just let us know.

If you have started the tour in Rotterdam, you will end in The Hague. If you booked the 'with pick-up/drop-off' option, you will be dropped off again afterwards, at your hotel or another location of your choice.

1. Mauritshuis
Your guide meets you here and tells you about the Mauritshuis and its history. The museum holds the most famous paintings of Johannes Vermeer, both made in Delft of course!

2. Binnenhof & Ridderzaal
You briefly walk onto the square inside the parliament complex, where your guide tells you about the meaning and history of this place.

3. Het Plein
You walk across the Plein ('The Square') and stop at the statue of William of Orange, the Father of the Fatherland. The current king is a direct descendant of his, and you will see William again later today in Delft!

4. Hofvijver
The Hofvijver pond lies in front of the parliament buildings and the prime minister's office (the little tower!). You learn why this place matters and hear some fun stories from its history.

5. Thorbecke Monument
The statue of Thorbecke next to the Hofvijver is more interesting than it looks: it has to do with the Dutch constitution. Your guide tells you more.

6. Lange Voorhout
The Lange Voorhout is the Champs-Élysées of The Hague. As you stroll along it, you pass several embassies, an art museum, the temporary senate building, a gallery of statues of Dutch heads of state and more (royal) buildings.

You see the Grote Kerk ('Great Church') of The Hague. What is that stork doing on top of it?

8. Statue of Johan de Witt
Another statue, with a remarkable story: Johan de Witt was a Dutch head of government who was literally eaten by an angry mob. It sounds strange, but you'll find out what happened.

9. Oostpoort
You arrive in Delft by car and enter the city through the only city gate still standing: the Oostpoort ('East Gate'). After a 5-minute walk, you reach your lunch spot on the Beestenmarkt square.

10. Beestenmarkt
You have arrived at the Beestenmarkt ('Animal Market'), the coziest square in Delft and the perfect place for lunch and a drink, with plenty to choose from. In the past, this square had a very different function.

11. Maria van Jessekerk
Next, you pass the first Catholic church built in the center of Delft. There is something funny about its two towers... It also stands on the spot where Johannes Vermeer lived and made his paintings.

12. New Church
On the Market Square, you see the second-tallest church in the Netherlands, where the Dutch royal family is buried. Why in Delft? You'll find out.

13. Stadhuis Delft
On the same square stands Delft's old town hall. Parts of it date back to the 13th century, which makes it one of the oldest buildings in the city. Besides a town hall, it also served as a prison for centuries, with one particularly famous prisoner!

You are now in Delft's old beer brewing quarter. Where did all the brewers go? You also see the Old Church, perhaps the most recognizable building in the city. How old is it exactly, and why does its tower lean? Your guide knows!

15. Museum Prinsenhof Delft
You take a peek into the inner courtyard of William of Orange's former residence, the very place where he was shot. There is another statue of him here, this one life-sized. Are you taller than him?

Close to the Old Church, you see the richly decorated facade of the Gemeenlandshuis. What is this building, and why was it so important? You also 'visit' the smallest museum in Delft!

17. Armamentarium
You walk along the oldest canal of Delft, away from the Old Church. In the south of the city center, you pass a large former armory and the headquarters of the Delft chamber of the Dutch East India Company. You learn about Delft's role in the Golden Age of the Dutch Republic, and nearby you see the exact spot where Vermeer stood when he painted his famous View of Delft.

18. Station Delft - Delft Railway Station
You walk back north along a parallel canal, passing more interesting places on the way. You end up next to Delft station, where a private car takes you to Rotterdam.

19. City Hall Rotterdam
You arrive by car on the Coolsingel, in the heart of Rotterdam, near the city hall. You see the outside (and possibly the inside) of Rotterdam's city hall, then make your way toward Rotterdam Blaak and the Old Harbour.

20. Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk
Right next to the modern Markthal stands a 14th-century church whose tower miraculously survived the bombing of Rotterdam. Today it is mostly used for events. You learn more about the church and about Erasmus!

Now you go inside the impressive Markthal ('Market Hall'), with apartments on both sides and food from all over the world inside. And don't forget to look up at one of the biggest artworks in the world!

22. Kijk-Kubus
You visit one of the quirky Cube Houses, designed in the 1970s and completed in the early 1980s: typical Rotterdam. Yes, people really live in them! Find out how practical that is.

Het Witte Huis ('The White House') was the first skyscraper in Europe. It is also one of the few buildings here that survived the bombing of central Rotterdam.

24. Oude Haven
You are now in the Oude Haven ('Old Harbour'), a lively area with a great view and old ships moored along the quay. The tour ends here, so you can settle down on one of the many terraces, continue to the city center or cross to the south bank of the river Maas within 10 minutes.
