Overview

Discover two completely different sides of Holland on this full-day private tour: modern Rotterdam and historic Delft, with a private boat ride, tickets, lunch, and transfers all included. In Rotterdam, your guide takes you through the bold, rebuilt city: past the iconic Markthal, the old St. Lawrence Church, and the famous Cube Houses, one of which you step inside. The highlight is a private boat ride on the Maas, where you take in Rotterdam's skyline from the water. In Delft, you step into the Dutch Golden Age: the Market Square, the New and Old Church, the Prinsenhof where William of Orange was assassinated, and Royal Delft, the only Delft Blue manufacturer still operating since the 17th century. Lunch is included in Delft. You can do this tour in either direction. Pick-up and drop-off from other locations, including Amsterdam, can also be arranged. This is a private tour. You set the pace, and if you have any special requests or an interest in a certain topic, just let us know.

Itinerary

1. Rotterdam Centraal Station
Your guide meets you at Rotterdam Centraal, the city's new train station, where the tour starts. Some 170,000 people pass through it every day!
Duration: 10 mins
2. Groothandelsgebouwen N.V.
As soon as you leave the station, you see the Groothandelsgebouw. When it opened in 1949, it was the largest building in Europe, and it is an icon of Rotterdam's reconstruction.
Duration: 5 mins
3. Hofplein
You walk past a seemingly ordinary roundabout, but for the people of Rotterdam this place is almost sacred. Of course, it has to do with football.
4. City Hall Rotterdam
You see one of the few buildings in Rotterdam that survived the war: the city hall. Who are those statues? Your guide tells you.
Duration: 10 mins
5. Timmerhuis - OMA
The Timmerhuis housed the department that managed the city's reconstruction after the war. The building itself also reflects the mix of old and new that Rotterdam is all about.
Duration: 5 mins
6. Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk
Close to the modern Markthal stands a 14th-century church whose tower also miraculously survived the bombing of Rotterdam. Today it is mostly used for events. You learn about the church's history and about a famous man who was born here: Erasmus.
Duration: 10 mins
7. Markthal
This building has become an icon of the city. You go inside the impressive Markthal (Market Hall), with apartments on both sides and food from all over the world inside, and you taste some Dutch cheese. And don't forget to look up at one of the biggest artworks in the world!
Duration: 10 mins
8. Kijk-Kubus Museum-house
You have probably noticed the Cube Houses already. Now you walk underneath them and even go inside one. Would you be comfortable living here?
Duration: 20 mins
9. Willemsbrug
You walk to the river Maas, close to the red Willemsbrug bridge. Heavy fighting took place here in May 1940, before the bombing of the city. From here you have a clear view of Rotterdam's impressive skyline and the other side of the river.
Duration: 5 mins
10. Here you board your own water taxi, one of the fast yellow boats for small groups, for a 45-minute ride on the river Maas. It is the best way to take in the skyline and part of the port of Rotterdam.
Duration: 45 mins
11. Oude Haven
Walking away from the river, you enter the Old Harbour area, where the port of Rotterdam began in the 15th century. Today it is a place for drinks and for watching old ships being restored by hand, while the actual port, the biggest in Europe, starts a few kilometers away.
Duration: 10 mins
12. Witte Huis
Close to the river, you see the Witte Huis, the most prominent building in the Old Harbour area. Dating from 1898, it is the oldest skyscraper in Europe. You learn about its significance to the city, and if you look carefully, you can still see the marks of German bullets.
Duration: 10 mins
13. Rotterdam Blaak
You head underground into Blaak, the UFO-shaped train station, and take a direct train to the center of Delft (17 minutes).
Duration: 20 mins
14. Station Delft - Delft Railway Station
From Delft station, you walk into the city.
Duration: 10 mins
15. Armamentarium

Duration: 15 mins
16. Vrienden van de Synagoge Delft
On your way to the Beestenmarkt, you walk along another of Delft's charming canals and pass the city's old neoclassical synagogue.
Duration: 15 mins
17. Maria van Jessekerk
This is the newest church in Delft's city center, only about 150 years old. It is a Catholic church, which was not allowed here before that time. And what about its two different towers? You'll see.
Duration: 10 mins
18. Beestenmarkt
On the Beestenmarkt, a former animal market and now a favorite square among locals, you stop for a well-deserved lunch.
Duration: 60 mins
19. New Church
You see the second-tallest church tower in the Netherlands, home to the family grave of the Dutch royal family. The church dates from the 14th century but has suffered quite some damage over the centuries, and you hear all about it. If you like, you can climb the tower (about 370 steps).
Duration: 20 mins
20. Stadhuis Delft
The old town hall is one of the most important historic buildings in Delft. You pass it as you leave the Market Square on your way to the Old Church, and your guide tells you what makes it so interesting.
Duration: 10 mins
21. Old Church
After leaving the Market Square and passing the Butter House, the Weigh House and Antony van Leeuwenhoek's old house, you reach the old beer brewing quarter and the Old Church, the leaning tower of Delft. Johannes Vermeer is buried here. But why is it leaning? You'll find out.
Duration: 15 mins
22. Museum Prinsenhof Delft
Opposite the Old Church is the Prinsenhof, a former monastery. It played a decisive role in Dutch history, as the Father of the Fatherland was assassinated here in 1584. Your guide tells you the story.
Duration: 10 mins
23. Gemeenlandshuis van Delfland
Along the Oude Delft canal, you see the oldest house in Delft. Its richly decorated facade belongs to the Water Board, which has been based here since 1645. What is a water board, and why was (and is) it so important?
Duration: 15 mins

You head back to the central Market Square, where an electric tuk-tuk is waiting to take you to Royal Delft.
Duration: 20 mins
25. Royal Delft - Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles
You arrive at Royal Delft, the only original Delft Blue pottery factory still in operation, founded in 1653. Here you get an audio tour through the museum and the working factory. Afterwards, you can visit the shop and café before a tuk-tuk takes you back to Delft (the city center or the station).
Duration: 60 mins
