Overview

Walk in Vermeer's footsteps through Delft, then see his work up close at the Vermeer Centrum. • Private walking tour of about 2.5 hours • Entrance tickets to the Vermeer Centrum (with audio guide) • Entrance tickets to the Old Church and the New Church From the Market Square, your guide takes you to the places that shaped Vermeer's life: where he was born and lived, the Old Church where he is buried, the Hooikade, where you look at the city from almost the same angle as his View of Delft, and the Vlamingstraat, believed to be the location of The Little Street. After the walk, you visit the Vermeer Centrum at your own pace. It stands on the site of the Guild of St. Luke, the painters' guild Vermeer belonged to, and shows reproductions of all his paintings and explains the symbolism and techniques he used. The tour starts and ends in the city center. Pick-up from a location of your choice, like Amsterdam, can be added. Ideal for art lovers looking for context and depth.

Itinerary

1. Markt
Your tour starts on Delft's Market Square, where much of Vermeer's life took place. There is a lot to see here: the New Church, the statue of Hugo Grotius, the former house of Vermeer's father, the house where Vermeer later lived, the town hall, the oldest shop in Delft, the Butter House, the Weigh House and more. Your guide tells you all about it.
Duration: 20 mins
2. Old Church
From the Market Square, you walk to the Old Church. Many famous Dutch people are buried here, including Johannes Vermeer. You go inside the church and visit his grave.
Duration: 45 mins
3. Museum Prinsenhof Delft
A visit to Delft is not complete without the Prinsenhof, where the Father of the Fatherland was killed. This happened almost 50 years before Vermeer was born, but it played a decisive role in the city's history.
Duration: 15 mins
4. Gemeenlandshuis van Delfland
On your way to the south of Delft, where Vermeer painted his View of Delft, you first pass an impressive facade from around 1500: that of the Water Board. Your guide tells you all about it.
Duration: 10 mins
5. VOC-Kamer Delft
Near the south end of the city, you pass the Delft chamber of the Dutch East India Company. This company brought exotic materials and pigments to the Netherlands and so indirectly helped Vermeer's career.
Duration: 20 mins
6. Armamentarium
Opposite the Dutch East India Company building stands the former armory of the States of Holland. An early version of this building can be seen in Vermeer's View of Delft.
7. Hooikade
From here, you look at Delft from exactly the same angle as Vermeer did when he made his famous painting of the city. What can you still recognize today?
Duration: 20 mins
8. Maria van Jessekerk
Back north, you see the Maria van Jessekerk, a Catholic church. In Vermeer's time, this was the area where Catholics lived and held hidden church services. That is also why Vermeer's house (that of his mother-in-law, where he lived and made all his paintings) stood here. New research from 2023 suggests the house may not have been demolished after all. Are the curtains finally open?
Duration: 30 mins
9. Vlamingstraat
Before going to the Vermeer museum, you visit the Vlamingstraat. Number 42 on this street is now believed to be the house in Vermeer's painting of a little street in Delft. See what it looks like today.
Duration: 15 mins
10. Vermeer Centrum Delft
You now enter the Vermeer Centrum, a museum about the life and work of Vermeer, housed in the former painters' guild of Delft. Vermeer spent a lot of time here and even became head of the painters within the guild.
Duration: 90 mins
