Overview

Alberto Aveleyra, ethnohistorian of the National School of Anthropology is the curator of the Archaeological Exhibit of the Historical Museum of San Miguel (the House of Allende). Alberto is a published author and one of the main researchers of the site. The famous journal Ancient Mesoamerica from Cambridge University just published his work on Cañada de la Virgen archaeological site (Ancient Mesoamerica 18 may 2026), you can check this an other articles in his web page or academia.edu web page. Because the lack of support of the government, Alberto is funding his research through the tours he offers in the site. He does not have comments in tripadvisor because he has been selling his tours thorugh airbnb where you can see the comments of his experience, one of the best rated in that portal. His research proposes that the site probably was the sanctuary of Colhuacan Chicomoztoc, "The place where they have ancestors" "The place of the Seven caves", the place of origen of Aztecs.

Itinerary

1. Canada de la Virgen
Walk with me through this indigenous sanctuary founded in the VI century A.D. While we walk through this beautiful natural landscape, learn about the 30 centuries old pre-Hispanic native civilizations, their rites, the cult to the ancestors, the archaeological excavations on the site and the research I´m doing there. My resarch is about the Prehispanic routes used by the ancient pilgrims and the cultural meanings of the processions performed there. The DNA research reveals that this archaeological site was a multi-ethnic sanctuary, it was the goal for pilgrims coming from different parts of Mexico for a period of 500 years between the VI and the XI century of our era.
