Overview

Rotterdam is unlike any other Dutch city. Bombed almost entirely to the ground during WWII, it rebuilt itself from scratch and became a laboratory for bold, experimental architecture. The result is one of Europe's most visually striking cities. On this private walking tour, you explore the highlights of Rotterdam with your own guide. You visit the Old Harbor, and see the iconic Cube Houses up close. Your tour includes entry into one of them, so you can see for yourself what it looks like to live inside one. Along the way, your guide tells the story of Rotterdam: from St. Lawrence Church, the only medieval building in the city center to survive the 1940 bombing, to the Witte Huis, the oldest skyscraper in Europe, to the spectacular modern Markthal. This is a private tour. You set the pace, and if you have a special interest in a certain topic, just let your guide know.

Itinerary

1. Rotterdam Blaak
Your tour starts in the Blaak area, the place where Rotterdam has its origins: a dam in the river Rotte. Today it is a lively area with a market twice a week.
Duration: 15 mins
2. Markthal
This building has become an icon of the city. You go inside the impressive Markthal (Market Hall), with apartments on both sides and food from all over the world inside. And don't forget to look up at one of the biggest artworks in the world!
Duration: 15 mins
3. City Hall Rotterdam
You walk to Rotterdam's city hall, one of the few pre-war buildings in the city. It stands on the Coolsingel, the Champs-Élysées of Rotterdam!
Duration: 15 mins
4. Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk
Close to the modern Markthal stands a 14th-century church whose tower miraculously survived the bombing of Rotterdam. Today it is mostly used for events. You learn about the church's history and about a famous man who was born here: Erasmus.
Duration: 15 mins
5. Witte Huis
Next is the most prominent building in the Old Harbour area: the White House (Het Witte Huis), the oldest skyscraper in Europe, dating from 1898. You learn about its significance to the city, and if you look carefully, you can still see the marks of German bullets. Your guide tells you all about it.
Duration: 15 mins
6. Oude Haven
You are now in the Oude Haven (Old Harbour), a lively area with lots of terraces. You see more of Piet Blom's architecture and old ships moored here for restoration. Today, the real port of Rotterdam lies many kilometers to the west.
Duration: 15 mins
7. Kijk-Kubus Museum-house
You have probably noticed them already: the Cube Houses. These quirky homes by Piet Blom were designed in the 1970s, built in the early 1980s, and follow the idea of a 'village inside a city'. You go inside one of them, and the entrance fee is included in the tour price. Afterwards, you walk back to the meeting point at Blaak station. Enjoy the rest of your stay!
