Itinerary

1. Myeong-dong Cathedral
Welcome to Myeongdong Cathedral, the beautiful historic church that serves as the heart of Catholic history in Korea. Korean Catholicism has a truly unique story. Unlike almost every other country, it was not started by foreign missionaries. Instead, about 250 years ago, local Korean scholars found Western books and began studying them simply as an academic subject. As they read, they were deeply moved by the ideas of equality and spiritual truth. Entirely on their own—long before any foreign priests arrived—these scholars chose to accept these ideas as their personal faith and started the first Catholic community in Korea. On this tour, you will discover this amazing story. We will take you on a journey from the early days of this self-started faith, through times of severe government persecution, to the cathedral’s modern role as a powerful symbol of freedom and human rights.
