From Underberg, turn towards Himeville at the Shell Garage/KFC intersection. Drive approximately 5 km through Himeville. Pass Faithway School on your right, then continue for about 100 m. The entrance to The Stables, our meeting point, will be on your left. Coffee shop on site.

Itinerary

1. Sani Pass
Your journey begins in the rolling foothills of the Southern Drakensberg, where the lower reaches of Sani Pass wind through a landscape of sweeping grasslands, crystal-clear mountain streams, and striking sandstone formations. This section of the pass showcases some of the region’s most beautiful scenery, with dramatic cliffs carved by centuries of erosion and open vistas stretching across the valleys below. During the summer months, the slopes are dotted with colourful wildflowers, while magnificent proteas thrive in the high-altitude grasslands. As you ascend towards the South African border post, your guide will stop at selected viewpoints to share insights into the area’s geology, biodiversity, and history. This lower section offers a gentler introduction to the mountains, allowing guests to appreciate the unique beauty of the Drakensberg ecosystem before the real mountain adventure begins.

The route traverses rugged cliffs, narrow mountain ledges, and dramatic valleys, with each turn revealing even more breathtaking views. This section highlights the engineering challenges and natural beauty that have made the pass legendary among travellers and off-road enthusiasts alike. As your experienced guide navigates the ascent in a purpose-built 4×4 vehicle, you'll gain a true appreciation for the remoteness and grandeur of the Drakensberg escarpment. Here, you'll experience the warmth and hospitality of the Basotho people during a visit to a local village, where you’ll gain insight into daily life, cultural traditions, and the resilience required to thrive in this challenging mountain environment. The descent offers some of the best panoramic views of the day, with sweeping vistas across the Southern Drakensberg and the landscapes below.
