Overview
Step behind the Iron Curtain on this small-group walking tour through former East Berlin. In two hours, discover daily life under Soviet rule — from the Stasi secret police to daring escapes that risked everything for freedom. Starting at the Brandenburg Gate, follow your guide into the former Soviet sector, passing the one-time embassies of the major Cold War powers. Stop at the Stasimuseum to learn how East Germany's secret police monitored its own citizens, then continue to the Palace of Tears, the former crossing where families were torn apart and reunited. End at the Berlin Wall Memorial, standing where the Wall once divided a nation, and learn the meaning behind "ostalgie," the bittersweet nostalgia some Berliners still feel for the East. With a max of 20 travelers, more personal experience than most Cold War tours in the city. Good to know: a short stretch of transit costs about €2.80 per person if you don't have a day ticket. Comfortable shoes recommended.

6. This unassuming stop hides one of the Cold War's strangest quirks: it was a "ghost station," sealed shut and patrolled by East German guards while West Berlin trains rumbled through underneath without stopping. Because Berlin's transit lines didn't follow the Wall's exact path, some West Berlin train routes had no choice but to pass directly beneath East German territory, creating eerie stations frozen in time, visible only as blacked-out platforms glimpsed through train windows for nearly three decades. Your guide will explain how this bizarre transit arrangement came to be, what happened to the guards stationed underground, and how these ghost stations reopened almost overnight when the Wall fell in 1989.
