Overview

Most visitors see Tokyo's bright side. This 2-hour evening walk shows you the side they miss: the quiet places where Japanese people still live alongside their beliefs, their history and their dead. We begin at Hachiko, with the true story of the world's most loyal dog. From there, we leave the crowds of Shibuya for hidden backstreets of tiny bars and a small shrine guarded by stone foxes, then ride one stop to an elegant avenue that still remembers the night it burned in 1945. Our final stop is Aoyama Cemetery, one of Tokyo's oldest, where you'll hear what Japanese tradition says happens after we die, stand at the graves of a samurai statesman and a loyal general, and find Hachiko again, reunited with his master. No actors and no jump scares, just real places and true stories told with respect. Perfect for couples and families looking for a night in Tokyo they won't find anywhere else.

Itinerary

1. Hachiko
Meet your local guide at the statue of Hachiko, the loyal dog who waited at Shibuya Station every day for ten years after his master died. His story opens the evening with a value Japan has long cherished: loyalty that doesn't end with death. Keep him in mind. He returns later tonight.
Duration: 10 mins
2. Shibuya Crossing
Cross the world's busiest intersection together, where up to 3,000 people may cross at once. Your guide explains how Shibuya got its name from the valley beneath your feet, before the group leaves the crowds behind for the backstreets.
Duration: 10 mins
3. Step off the tourist map into Shibuya's oldest nightlife quarter, a maze of tiny bars and old buildings most visitors walk straight past. Your guide shares how this hidden corner changed from a geisha district into what it is today, and introduces a small shrine guarded by stone foxes that still stands quietly between the buildings.
Duration: 10 mins
4. Aoyama Cemetery
Cross a dark bridge into one of Japan's oldest public cemeteries, opened in 1874, where about 135,000 people rest. On the way, hear what Japanese Buddhism says happens after we die, and a ghost story Tokyo taxi drivers still tell. Inside, find Hachiko again: a monument to him stands beside his master's grave. We walk quietly and stay on the paved paths.
Duration: 15 mins
5. Visit the grave of Okubo Toshimichi, one of the founders of modern Japan. Born a samurai, he helped bring the samurai class to an end and was assassinated in 1878 by men from that same world. His grave, marked by a stone torii gate, shows how Japan honors its leaders. Your guide will invite you to share your own view.
Duration: 10 mins
6. On the way to the cemetery, we pass a neighborhood elementary school while your guide tells the story of Hanako-san, a ghost legend almost every Japanese child grows up with. The legend is told in schools across Japan and is not about this school. Out of respect for the local community, we do not stop or take photos here.
Duration: 10 mins
