Itinerary

1. Begin at the entrance beside Maguire’s Café, where your guide Derek introduces Tara, a sacred site for over 5,000 years. Hear why it still stirs Irish hearts, from ancient rituals to the huge political rallies and bloody battles fought here in later centuries.
2. St Patrick's Church
The tour passes by Saint Patrick's Church.
3. See one of Ireland’s oldest Stone Age passage tombs, built around 5,000 years ago and aligned with the rising sun at key times of the year. Hear about the ancient burials found inside, and the legendary High King Niall of the Nine Hostages.
4. Lay a hand on the Lia Fáil, the coronation stone said to roar when the rightful High King of Ireland touched it. Hear about the strange and sometimes unsavoury trials a would-be king had to pass before he could rule.
5. Walk the ringfort where early Church gatherings are said to have been held. Hear how, around 1900, treasure hunters dug it up searching for the Ark of the Covenant, to the outrage of Irish nationalists.
6. Discover the earthwork named after Gráinne, the princess who fled her wedding to the ageing hero Fionn mac Cumhaill and eloped with the young warrior Diarmuid, sparking one of the great chases of Irish legend.
7. Finish the walk at Castleboy as Derek wraps up the story of Tara. Take a final look back at the hill of kings before returning to the entrance, where Maguire’s Café, a bookshop and gift shops are waiting.
