Overview

Waterton Glacier International Peace Park is renowned for its wildflowers and is known as the "wildflower capital of Canada,". The peak time for viewing the widest variety of wildflowers in the park is generally from end-June to early August, with the absolute pinnacle often cited as the beginning of third week of June until middle of July. The park is home to more than 400 flowering plant species. Wildflower season is always so magical in fact, the Waterton National Park is dubbed the Wildflower Capital of Canada! Beargrass is a showy and unofficial emblem of the park and Fireweed often blooms at higher elevations. Found on lower elevations in late spring, Glacier Lilies become the Queen. The open fields and protected habitats are dominated by the Silky Lupin. Wild Bergamot, Penstemon and Balsam Root are common along the trails. Wildrose the symbol of Alberta can be found can be found throughout the park. Wood lily, dessert paintbrush, crimson columbine, firewheel...you name it!

1. Red Rock Canyon Waterton Park is one of the most scenic and geologically rich places inside the National Park. Blakiston Falls is an easy to reach waterfall near Red Rock Canyon. This is an incredible area for geology geeks as the rocks are ancient, colourful and fascinating.

3. The Akamina Parkway in Waterton Lakes National Park (a.k.a. Cameron Lake Road), is a gorgeous 9.4 mile drive through an amazing canyon that ends at the incredibly scenic Cameron Lake. Bighorn sheep are often seen in the cliffs along the first several miles of the parkway, and sometimes you'll see a band of bighorn sheep actually on the road.
